What is Not Covered by Flood Insurance?

Flood insurance is essential, but it doesn’t cover everything. Before the next storm hits, let’s make sure you understand what is included so you are not left paying unexpected bills.

What is covered?

Flood insurance is designed to cover your home and belongings if they are damaged due to a flood. Flood insurance is offered through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or with private insurers depending on where you live. Coverage is split into two main parts:

  • Building coverage: Helps protect the physical structure of your home, electrical and plumbing systems, central heating and cooling systems, built-in appliances, and detached garages.
  • Personal property coverage: Helps protect your furniture and electronics, clothing, portable appliances, food freezers, and certain valuables.

What is not covered?

While flood insurance provides substantial protection, it does not cover everything. Here are some key things a standard flood insurance policy does not cover:

  • Damage caused by moisture, mold, or mildew: If mold or mildew results from a lack of cleaning or maintenance after a flood, it may not be covered.
  • Landscaping: Trees, plants, and shrubs are not covered. Outdoor property such as fences, patios, and decks are also not covered.
  • Additional living expenses: If your home becomes uninhabitable, temporary housing and additional expenses like food and hotels are not covered.
  • Cars and other vehicles: Flood damage to cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles are covered under comprehensive car insurance, not flood insurance.
  • Currency and important documents: Cash, stock certificates, bonds, and personal records are not covered.
