What is long term care insurance?
Long term care insurance is designed to cover long term services and supports. It assists the insured with the five daily acts of living such as grooming, dressing, toileting, transfer or ambulating, and eating. These services can be done in an assisted living facility, at home or in a nursing home. The cost of long term care depends on the age, gender and type/length of care needed by the insured.
What is Medicare?
Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. Part A covers inpatient hospital stays and care in a skilled nursing facility. Part B covers medical care such as doctor visits, outpatient care, and medical supplies. Medicare Part D is separate coverage that helps cover the cost of prescription drugs.
Will Medicare cover long term care?
There is a common misconception that Medicare covers everything; including long term care. Nearly 50% of adults over the age of 65 believe that Medicare covers long term care in a nursing home. This is not the case. Medicare does not cover long-term care beyond skilled treatment in a nursing facility or rehabilitation. Medicare does not cover the tasks of everyday life. However, it is still important to have Medicare coverage as it will cover medical bills, doctor visits, prescriptions, etc.
